The Timeline That Keeps Moving

In 2016, SpaceX founder Elon Musk suggested crewed Mars missions could begin as early as 2022. That date has shifted repeatedly since - to 2024, then 2026, then 2028 - and in February 2026, SpaceX confirmed another delay, pushing its Mars ambitions back by roughly five to seven years to focus on lunar missions first. NASA's own outlook has remained more conservative throughout, with the agency not anticipating a crewed Mars mission until the late 2030s at the earliest, a timeline that hasn't moved nearly as dramatically because it was never as aggressive to begin with.

What Actually Happened in Early 2026

The reasons for the latest delay were structural, not incidental. NASA's flagship Mars Sample Return program - designed to bring physical Martian soil and rock samples back to Earth for study - was effectively cancelled in January 2026 over cost overruns and schedule slips. SpaceX's Starship, the vehicle central to any crewed Mars mission, continues to face real engineering hurdles, particularly around in-orbit propellant transfer - refuelling one Starship with another while both are in orbit - a capability that has not yet been fully demonstrated and is considered essential for a Mars-capable mission architecture.

Why Getting to Mars Is So Much Harder Than the Moon

The physics alone make Mars a different order of challenge than the Moon missions of the 1960s and 2020s. The average Earth-Mars distance is around 225 million kilometres, with a one-way trip taking six to nine months depending on orbital alignment - compared to roughly three days to reach the Moon. Launch windows only open roughly every 26 months, when the planets' orbits align favourably, meaning a missed window costs over two years, not a quick rescheduling. Astronauts would face sustained cosmic radiation exposure far beyond what a lunar mission involves, along with the psychological toll of genuine, unresolvable isolation - no possibility of a quick return if something goes wrong partway through.

China Is Moving Forward, Differently

While the highest-profile crewed ambitions have slipped, robotic Mars exploration continues to advance. China's Tianwen-3 sample return mission is proceeding on a more conservative, incremental timeline aimed at bringing Martian material back to Earth without the added complexity and risk of a crewed mission - a strategy that mirrors how the Apollo programme was preceded by years of uncrewed precursor missions, rather than attempting to leapfrog directly to human landings.

The Honest Assessment

Experts broadly agree that some version of a crewed Mars mission is genuinely achievable within this generation's lifetime - the physics and engineering, while extremely hard, are not fundamentally impossible in the way that, say, faster-than-light travel is. What experts are consistently sceptical of is the specific timelines that have been publicly promised, which have proven wrong every single time so far. The realistic read is less exciting than the headlines: Mars remains a genuine, serious goal that humanity is incrementally working toward, not an imminent event happening on the timeline any single announcement has claimed.
